Pneumatic and Mechanical Unloaders

  • A flexible arrangement

Flexibility in product handling has been helped along by the wide range of unloaders available. For example, besides the larger machines, Vigan produces compact, trailerable units which can deployed in some interesting ways. 16 Dec 2009 - Port Strategy

  • Simple mechanics

With the advancements in ship cargo handling technology, the pneumatic unloader should offer significant advantages over its mechanical cousin. But does it? Patrik Wheater investigates 19 Dec 2008 - Port Strategy

  • Shaking new ground

Regarded as very flexible but 'energy hungry'machines, pneumatic unloaders for bulk product are getting more sophisticated and are making use of new types of energy-efficient electronic controls. David Foxwell reports 01 Mar 2007 - Port Strategy

  • Cost-conscious Buhler

Buhler's Portanova unloader has a nominal capacity of 310 tonnes/ hour is based on wheat with a bulk density of 0.75 tonnes/m3.The machine has a peak unloading rate of 345 tonnes/hour.  01 Mar 2007 - Port Strategy

  • What about the workers?

Because pneumatic unloaders produce less dust emission, equipment operators consequently inhale lower quantities of dust which makes them safer to work with. In comparison to grabs, from which material can so easily escape, practically nothing gets out of an enclosed pneumatic discharge operation. This lack of dust is much more notable during hold cleaning operations, which is when grab operatives are much more exposed to unwanted atmospheric discharges. So for those workers deployed in the hold during grab operations, safety issues remain a real concern. 01 Jan 2006 - Port Strategy
