Integrate software to increase throughput

01 Dec 2005

It is estimated that Felixstowe has almost doubled its throughput, without the need for additional equipment, since introducing its Tug Scheduling System (TSS). TSS is a bespoke system which provides real time scheduling, monitoring and control of tractor/trailers in the container terminal.

The system uses radio data telemetry to monitor container moves and transmit instructions to displays in the vehicle cabs. The system came about because analysis showed that the greatest bottleneck in throughput at the terminal was due to inefficient horizontal transport between the quay cranes and the yard stacks.

Many software solution providers now offer modular systems with various benefits which can be integrated with the main terminal operating system. "Almost all the hardware is off the shelf and much of the software is off the shelf too while almost all systems integration is custom," says Keith Dierkx, senior vp of operations at Embarcadero Systems Corporation. "Don't focus on the glamour of new technologies," he advises. "Success is dependent on the integration of the technologies into the business process."
