Olympics brings steel green corridors to the UK

07 Nov 2007

A notable sheet piling project under way in the UK right now is within the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)'s project to turn the 8.35 km of waterways that intersect the Olympic Park into "green corridors".

The waterways are currently polluted, neglected and under-used. As part of creating Europe's largest urban park for 150 years, the ODA is regenerating the waterways in a project that includes remodelling over 3.5 km of river banks. The programme of work to stabilise banks and repair and replace river walls has recently begun next to the Aquatics Centre, where the waterway is being widened and new river walls built.

Dilapidated 1930s concrete river walls are being replaced; 11 tonne steel piles are being vibrated into the ground, making the river eight metres wider along the western bank of the site.
