A new twist on an old method

02 Mar 2011

It would be wrong to assume that performance measures in the port industry are a recent phenomenon.

In fact, in liner as well as in charter shipping, port operations have long been measured and the measurements were and still are expressed in values that are indeed similar to some of the KPIs applied to today’s container terminal operations: Gross tonnage per crane-hour, gross working hours or net working hours are not only recorded in so called outturn reports, confirmed by ship’s command and terminal alike, but values like tonnes per hour are also stipulated in charter agreement.
