Transnet signs record Cavotec deal

Transnet National Port Authority has placed an order with Cavotec for the manufacturer’s largest single order to-date for its MoorMaster automated mooring units.

In an E10m deal, 26 MoorMaster 200C units will be installed at four container berths at the Port of Ngqura in two phases with the first scheduled to arrive by November 2014. It is expected that the first terminal will be fully automated by 2015.

Cavotec will design and manufacture the system for containerships up to 13,000 teu. It will also train local technicians to allow them to provide technical support for Transnet following delivery.

“The company will also commission an independent engineering study, using computer modelling of the berth, to make recommendations on the technical details and performance targets of the application,” said TNPA chief executive Tau Morwe.

The Port of Ngqura experiences “significant long wave effects and high winds”, he added, especially during winter, which causes “excessive movement in the ships along the quay wall which interferes with crane operations”.
