Nigerian strikes paralyse ports
20 Jan 2012
A strike by trade unions in Nigeria has effectively paralysed the country's port terminals, costing the domestic maritime sector an estimated $223m.
Although the protest is against the removal of a fuel subsidy - effectively doubling the price of petrol - all port terminals have been negatively impacted.
No containers have been delivered and none released from terminals.
According to a Maersk spokesperson, many vessels are currently at anchor while awaiting resolution of the strike, although others may have to be diverted should the strike continue.
