Auckland pioneers smart lighting
22 Nov 2011
New smart-switching technology has been developed by Ports of Auckland’s IT team to save power bills on port lighting.
Floodlighting at night has been difficult to control because of the 20-minute warm-up time required by each bulb, and the time spent getting to manual switches on individual towers.
The new system controls groups of lights from a computer screen, allowing power to be dimmed to quarter strength when required – still enough for security purposes.
The port estimates it is saving NZ$120,000 (US$94,200) a year as a result.
