DP World and HPH go ‘green’

17 Sep 2014

DP World and Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) are joining forces to run a ‘Waste Reduction Campaign’ in a bid to curb global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The campaign, which will run from 19 to 21 September 2014, has been set up with the theme: ‘Recycling Begins and Ends with You’. It will see employees of both companies take part in activities such as clean-up days at terminals, e-waste and battery recycling and green transportation to reduce vehicles emissions, at locations around the world where they both operate terminals within the same port complex. These locations include Laem Chabang (Thailand), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Busan (South Korea) and Buenos Aires (Argentina).

“We are committed to minimising the impact we have on the environment and maximising the benefits we can bring to the communities in which we operate, and we are therefore very pleased to be working with HPH on this important initiative,” said Mohammed Sharaf CEO, DP World Group.

“HPH has a long history as a green innovator with environmental programmes, covering everything from the local community to engineering projects that have been rolled out across the group. Through this collaboration, we will see the expanded scope of environmental activities and the impact that the industry can make on global warming issues,” added Eric Ip, managing director, HPH Group.

This ‘green’ collaboration comes as an estimated 11.2 billion tonnes of solid waste is collected worldwide every year and its degeneration is said to contribute to around 5% of global GHG emissions.
