Ust-Luga opening sets development agenda
Unifeeder’s Emotion arrives to offload its first cargo at ULCT
The call of its first container ship on December 29 marked the opening of the new NCC Ust-Luga Container Terminal (ULCT) in Russia, with weekly Unifeeder calls already in the bag.
NCC president, Alyona Ahurkova said: “Putting into operation of a new container terminal in the port of Ust-Luga also sets a development agenda for Russian transport industry for many years to come. Ahead of us is the implementation of three development stages which should result in ULCT becoming the largest and the most modern container terminal in Russia and the Baltic Sea region.”
Certainly Unifeeder is confident that ULCT will be successful. It said that the terminal offers a good alternative to the central St Petersburg city terminals. Unifeeder's chief executive, Jesper Kristensen said that ULCT will act as a “new gateway into Russia".
The opening of the terminal comes as a result the completion of the first stage of development at the end of November last year. ULCT is the first deep water container terminal in the Baltic Sea region.
The entire development is due for completion at the end of 2025 - at which point the terminal should be able to handle around 3m teu per year.
