On 12 May, in an official opening ceremony, the Liebherr Group opened its new works in Rostock for maritime cargo handling equipment. The LiebherrMCCtec Rostock GmbH production plant, erected on a site measuring 226,000 square metres in the port of Rostock, includes two production halls and an administration block together occupying a total of some 56,000 sq m.

The event held over 3 days at Rostock was impressive, with 600 guests and Liebherr staff attending the official opening ceremony, factory tours, equipment demonstrations and a gala dinner. After a rousing welcome of German brass band music by a local school, the official opening speeches were made by Frau Isolde Liebherr from the owning Liebherr family, Dr Harold Ringstorff Prime Minister for the region of Lecklenburg - Vorpommoren and Roland Methling the Mayor of Rostock.

Roland Methling highlighted the importance of the new factory to the region in terms of jobs regional promotion. He suggested as harbour cranes and reach stackers would be exported all over the world, that each one should be labelled "a souvenir from Rostock."

At the new factory Liebherr manufactures harbour mobile cranes as well as ship cranes with tare weights of up to 500 tonnes and also offshore cranes, special-purpose cranes and reach stackers. Thanks to its direct access to the sea, Rostock is very well placed in terms of the logistics of worldwide sales, especially as regards large equipment.

The total amount invested in the production plant comes to around ?60 million.

Some 250 staff are already employed at the site, and the workforce including temporary personnel totals more than 300. It is planned that staff numbers will increase fairly rapidly to 400 - 500.

The plant has been in operation from 2005 and already has orders to fully utilise its capacity. Liebherr also has factories at its Head Quarters in Nenzing, Austria, where it produces harbour cranes, mobile cranes crawler cranes and reach stackers; in Sunderland, UK where it focuses on ship and special purpose cranes and in Ireland where it produces ship-toshore container cranes and associated equipment.

Together with Rostock these factories comprise a strategic manufacturing network enabling Liebherr to adapt rapidly to the demands of the market. Interestingly, all the plants manufacture using a centralised data base employing exactly the same manufacturing processes and parts' codes. This enabled Liebherr to rapidly get its Rostock factory up and running.
