Strike greets DP World handover at Aden

Industry Database

DP World has now officially taken over management of box handling at the Port of Aden under a joint venture with the Yemen Gulf of Aden Port Corporation.

The agreement also includes the Ma'alla container terminal.

Workers at Aden immediately commenced a comprehensive strike in protest at the move.

The partners will invest $220m in developing the port. Elsewhere, DP World has agreed to invest $108m to upgrade ports at Algiers and Djen-Djen in Algeria.

Algiers will almost immediately be equipped with modern handling equipment and later have its draught deepened.
