The 1st Port Strategy Private Capital & Ports Conference

21 & 22 October 2009

London The 2009 Port Strategy Private Capital & Ports Conference brought together some of the industries most influential members from within the port and finance industry.

Held on 21-22 October 2009 at the Andaz Hotel in London’s financial district, this prestigious two day event was designed to discuss the latest thinking in the raising and efficient use of port finance, exploring future investment opportunities in challenging economic times and identifying the latest and emerging hotspots around the world.

Conference Chairmen Mike Mundy, Programme Director and Principal of Mike Mundy Associates, Alec Crawford, former Chairman of K-Line and current Independent Consultant for Oakbridge Maritime Consultants and James Cooper, Infracapital Director of Prudential M&G all presided over a full programme of 20 presentations held over eight sessions. The range of topics addressed all aspects of both the provision and consumption of port finance, with papers on day one discussing the implications for banks with respect to their funding strategies, what port investors are looking for when assessing a port investment opportunity and the risks that must be considered when choosing new business partners. Day two focused more on port infrastructure fund options, key issues for investors and the use of the stock market in the ports sector, followed by a fascinating insight into issues surrounding Eastern Europe and the Black Sea, with Olga Denschikova, Chief Market Research Officer of the National Container Corporation stepping in at the very last minute to deliver an excellent and well informed paper on the challenge of Russia.

The keynote address which was to be given by Olivier de la Laurencie, Operations Director for the Port of Le Havre Authority, looked at the major port reform that has been implemented in the seven major French seaports since July 2008. Sadly however, Mr de la Laurencie was unable to attend due to illness and Mike Mundy stepped in at the last minute to deliver the paper. The cocktail party on the evening of the first day was held in the stunning Gallery situated within the Andaz Hotel, which was a perfect opportunity for all speakers and delegates to relax and network over a cocktail or two. The next Port Strategy Private Capital & Ports Conference will be held in November 2010 – location to be confirmed. We will shortly be releasing a Call for Papers for the 2010 Conference.
