Synchro-modal Logistics meets Smart Steaming
SYNCHRO-NET is a unique combination of logistics scheduling and maritime transport optimisation. Real-time synchro-modal logistics planning systems optimise multimodal transport operations and port activity, while intelligent dynamic slow steaming strategies reduce costs and environmental impact, de-stressing and de-risking the supply chain.

A key benefit of the SYNCHRO-NET approach is reduced congestion in ports, due to the increased throughput and better planning of shipping and hinterland logistics movements. SYNCHRO-NET’s dynamic optimisation algorithms provide an integrated approach to scheduling port and hinterland logistics activity, using a balanced multi-objective strategy addressing cost vs reliability vs sustainability vs lead time.

This smooths freight flows through major hubs and terminals, and integrates dock scheduling and berth allocation with real-time smart steaming algorithms to maximise berth utilisation and reduce turnaround times. Congestion, noise and emissions around ports and terminals is reduced, benefiting the surrounding environment and enhancing port-hinterland links.

Furthermore SYNCHRO-NET catalyses accurate automated exchange of information, massively enhancing visibility along the supply chain. Real-time detection and response to disruptions and delays reduces uncertainly and enables port and customs authorities to optimise resource utilisation, reduce costs and increase throughputs.

SYNCHRO-NET is not just a theoretical concept – it is being trialled by COSCO in Valencia and Piraeus in the summer of 2018, with public presentations anticipated in September 2018.

SYNCHRO-NET is supported by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research Programme. The project is coordinated by DHL and involves 20 partners, including COSCO, Kuehne+Nagel and Dell.
