BCT has ordered an additional ship-to-shore gantry crane, and has already started some infrastructure works in connection with the new quay.
Bigger than a football field the ?16m facility is the first of its type in an arctic environment and one of only a handful around the world. Kokkola’s port authority, which is municipally owned, was inspired by a similar facility at Amsterdam’s Waterland terminal.
The AWT has a capacity of a million tonnes. The port wants to increase Russian transit cargo which currently makes up a third of traffic as well as attract new scheduled services.
