Cochin to upgrade quay infrastructure

Cochin port is to upgrade much of its existing quayside infrastructure to make cargo handling operations easier for dry bulk cargo.

The BTP Jetty is to be widened from 15 metres to 23 metres, while existing structures at the North Coal Berth will be replaced with a new structure, 300 metres longer than the existing one. This is scheduled to be operational by the end of next year.

The existing 10.5 metre draught in the port is also to be deepened to 12.5 metres.

Cochin is anticipating a huge loss in container traffic once the Vallarpadam container transhipment terminal comes on line, and is therefore opting to focus on handling more bulk cargo to compensate.
