Syria to upgrade ports

Syria has announced a budget of $800m to develop its ports and shipping industry by 2015, partially driven by the reconstruction of neighbouring Iraq.

The Lattakia container terminal will be a main beneficiary and an international consultant is to be brought in to prepare the necessary tender documents. The objective is to increase capacity to 2.5m teu by 2015.

Throughput in 2009 was 625,865 containers.
