ICTSI already has a strong presence in the Americas – but this will be the first terminal development for the operator in central America.
The decision was announced during a public hearing on 1 February 2013 in Tegucigalpa by members of the Commission for the Public-Private Alliance (COALIANZA) – part of the federal government of Honduras and FICOHA bank, the trustee of the conferred contract.
ICTSI’s new container terminal will have over 1000 metres of quay for containers and 400 metres for general cargo and it will cover a total of 62 hectares.
It will allow 14m of draft, which can be increased to 15m, meaning that it will allow for calls from the new generation of post-panamax vessels.
When completed, ICTSI says that the new terminal will handle around 1.8m teu per year.
