This is the tenth year in a row that the port has received an Energy Star award.
Richard Sinkoff, the Port of Oakland’s director of environmental programmes and planning, said: “This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to being a strong environmental advocate.”
The port’s headquarters currently ranks in the top 18% of the EPA benchmark for facilities nationwide.
To achieve an Energy Star award, a building must rank among the top 25% most energy efficient buildings in the market. Factors that affect scoring include building systems, operational hours, climate controls, equipment scheduling and equipment monitoring.
In order to achieve its energy-efficient goals the headquarters implemented a number of saving measures. These included modernising heating and air conditioning equipment which uses less energy, and installing new computer and printing equipment that requires less power.
The Port of Oakland also recently committed to improvements which will open up the Oakland Estuary for public recreation in order to safeguard its waterfront.
It is also one of a number of ports in California which has adopted different strategies to meet its eventual goal of operating all cargo-handling equipment on electricity or batteries.
In early May, legalisation to provide a partial tax exemption for terminal operators that purchase zero-emission, or near zero-emission, cargo-handling equipment in California was approved.
