Ports of Indiana identified the retired power plant site as a favourable location for the state’s fourth port earlier this month, and will now work closely with the Commercial Development Company (CDC) to determine the logistical viability of developing a port there.
CDC has further committed that Ports of Indiana will have the exclusive opportunity to investigate the site for port development.
As a result, the developer is planning to carry out environmental remediation and tear down all the buildings, which could take an estimated three to five years.
Rich Cooper, Ports of Indiana’s chief executive, said: “It’s too early to say what could be constructed here, but we’re excited to have the exclusive right to further investigate this site with CDC.
“We’ve already had enquiries from companies that may have interest in locating or shipping products at this site, which is definitely encouraging for future development.”
Governor Eric Holcomb added that pursuing the development of a new port in southeast Indiana “will help drive growth for the state’s 21st century agriculture and advanced manufacturing sectors” and “attract continued business investment to the state”.
