President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that the secretary of the Navy will return to the coast to perform security tasks and will join maritime customs and ports with the aim of eradicating the transfer of illegal substances and corruption.
“The purpose of this visit is for Manzanillo to continue to be prosperous commercially, safely, without violence and without corruption. It marks the beginning of a new policy and a new stage in port management in our country, ” Mr Obrador stressed.
The Port of Manzanillo in Colima, Mexico, is one of the most important in the country due to its trade with Asia. However, with the growth of the port, illicit goods were introduced and have significantly increased.
Due to the increase in drug trafficking, Colima has become one of the most violent states in the country, for which reason the president entrusted surveillance and security tasks to the secretary of the Navy.
In 2019, the port moved more than 3m containers, reported José Ignacio Peralta Sánchez, governor of the entity.
