Indonesia needs mega-port

Users of Indonesias Tanjung Priok Port have again called for the merger of its two container terminals – Jakarta International Container Terminal and Koja Container Terminal – to form a major hub able to compete with those in nearby Singapore, Malaysia and China.

In addition, the Indonesian National Ship Owners Association wants tariffs to be charged commensurate with regional competitors.

At present, the complaint is that tariffs are too rigid and that Indonesia loses $137m in foreign exchange, as 3m teu is transported to neighbouring countries.

The merger is supported by HPH’s John Meredith, whose company owns a 51% stake in JICT.
