Cochin has already made a preemptive strike against Colombo by announcing a 50% discount on vesselrelated charges as a means of boosting throughputs above the current level of 250,000 teu per year.
Much of the current traffic on offer at Cochin is currently shipped by feeder to Colombo for transhipment on to deepsea services, but much of this is expected to disappear in the near future. It has been estimated that exporters could save up to two weeks by attracting mainline services to the Indian mainland port.
