Congestion follows Auckland consolidation

Two-hour truck turnarounds have been reported during peak service periods at Ports of Auckland following the recent consolidation of container operations on to the Fergusson Terminal.

However, Ports of Auckland operations general manager Grant Jorey expects truck processing times will soon return to Australasian best standard of below 30 minutes through:

– increasing the ratio of straddle carriers to vehicle booking system (VBS) slots

– altering Bledisloe Terminal receival and delivery hours to better match overflow demand

– working collaboratively with the road transport industry to reduce VBS “no shows”

– and implementing further improvements to the Fergusson truck park to aid traffic flow and safety.

Prior to consolidating its two-terminal workforce, with the reported loss of 29 jobs, the port company had to negotiate a new collective employment agreement with the Maritime Union of New Zealand.
