The work is critical for Tallinn if it is to maintain its position as one of the most important ports serving the Russian and Kazakhstan markets; 90% of the Port of Tallinn’s throughput is transit cargo, but more space is needed, said port spokesman Sven Ratassepp.
“Most of our competitors around the Baltic Sea face quite serious capacity problems – often they are within the city areas and don’t have much land to expand,” he said. “We have in Muuga the possibility to enlarge the port to twice its size. This is our competitive advantage.”
