The safety and security of shipping moving in and out of the Mersey and its approaches is to be enhanced by an upgrade of the Norcontrol VTS system at the port of Liverpool. Installation of the latest equipment, which will include a new main port radar system in Liverpool, an upgrade of the complementary radar system at Point Lynas, Anglesey and an additional radar sensor for better coverage of the Eastam and Garston Channels, will be operational in January. Renewal of the hardware and software for the VTS will introduce an AIS providing information about each ship as it enters the area of the Irish Sea covered from the Mersey.
