The main access will be between Buenaventura and Puerto Lopez on the Meta River, from where there will be improved access to Puerto Ordaz in Venezuela.
The process will be taken forward in three phases and take 12 years to complete. The initial phase, which will be completed within 30 months, was launched in January. It involves building new docks at Cabuyaro,La Banqueta and Puerto Carreño, with dredging of the river to improve the passage of ships. Eventually, 850 km of the river connecting the ports at López and Carreño will be fully navigable.
