The government felt the “existing governance arrangements of the Port of Melbourne Corporation ensure the government is able to effectively engage with the port to understand its behaviour and reduce potential for abuse of power”. At the same time the government accepted recommendations the regional ports of Geelong and Portland, and current activities at the port of Hastings, no longer be regulated.
Melbourne channel regime rejected
The suggestion that the shared shipping channels for the port of Melbourne should be subject to a formal access regime has been rejected by the Victorian Government.
