This is an exciting new development for the port because the service utilises a unique low wagon than can transport high-cube boxes to areas of the UK that were previously inaccessible by rail.
The new service operates ‘SuperLow 45’ wagons manufactured by WH Davis. The wagons are capable of carrying the containers over non gauge enhanced and height restricted routes – opening up most of the UK rail network to larger freight from Teesport.
David Robinson, chief executive at PD Ports Group, said: “We’re delighted that the first rail service using these unique wagons will operate from our Teesport facility.
“High-cube containers enable customers to reduce their environmental impact and increase cost efficiencies thanks to the economies of scale offered by rail over road and the extra capacity offered by these larger containers compared with standard boxes”.
The service was originally set up to cater for containers being transported by logistics company P&O Ferrymasters, which were previously only transferable by road.
