Taranaki breach forces security review

Port Taranaki is to increase security measures after Greenpeace protesters boarded the vessel Noble Discoverer in late February – the third action at the port by members of the organisation in three years.

The Shell vessel, which is to drill three exploratory oil wells off the coast of Alaska, was temporarily prevented from departing when seven activists – including actress Lucy Lawless – scaled its rig.

Given its focus on the oil and gas exploration industry, Port Taranaki could increasingly become a focal point of environmental protests.
