Southern Kao-Hsiung remains the gateway with two more container terminals and a petro-chemical one planned but will be joined by Taipei becoming a global port with a future focus on sea-air logistics.
Taichung will look to become a free trade zone and Hua-Lien, according to TIPC Chairman Dr Hsiao Ding Hsun, will focus on tourism and green industry. Keelung is to overlap this is with an emphasis on tourism and cruises.
TIPC is planning an active and diverse business strategy both in Taiwan and overseas.
Already being planned is a joint venture with a port near Suzhou in Jiangsu province China. Another business TIPC is keen on is connecting second string ports, via feeder services to its Kaohsuing base.
This is being watched not so much for political implications but to see if it can be franchised elsewhere within Asia, especially Southeast and East Asia.
