More than 71,000 feet of containment boom had been deployed by the time the channel was partially re-opened yesterday and a further 192,500 feet of boom had been staged for possible deployment with another 20,680 feet ordered.
Shortly before the re-opening there were 46 outbound vessels and 47 inbound vessels in the queue for transit to the Port of Houston.
“A channel closing is always of concern to the Port of Houston Authority and to all ship channel users, including the many private facilities independently operated along the channel,” the authority said. It added that it was “uncertain” what, if any the financial impact will be for the private facilities or the Port of Houston Authority.
