According to Transport Minister Jorge Eduardo Rojas: “The modification of the concession contract means more investment for port infrastructure on the country’s Caribbean coast, which will make it even more competitive, efficient and attractive.”
Compas Cartagena will specialise in container handling and general cargo. Initially, investment of $43.3m was planned from 2006-2032, of which $25.2m has already been spent. The agreed modifications will expand the public land and water use area, as well as the adjacent area, while the port terminal will be reinforced and the existing quay lengthened by 110 metres.
Furthermore, the stacking yard will be expanded and the draft deepened in the access channel and alongside the berths.
Overall capacity will be effectively tripled, partly due to the acquisition of two additional quay cranes.
