The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) this month told port authorities to instruct ships to use low-sulfur fuel oil and reduce their speed when entering ports to emit fewer pollutants.
According to the Taiwan News, proposed amendment to Taiwan’s Air Pollution Control Act mean vessels in ports will be required to replace onboard generated power auxiliary engines that run on heavy fuels with electricity generated onshore to power cargo handling equipment and other ship’s service.
Taiwan International Port Corporation (TIPC) launched its ‘Taiwan Greening the Ports Action Plan’ in 2013, in a bid to increase profitability and competitiveness and create environmentally-friendly port areas.
From 2020, vessels in all ports will have to adhere to the global sulphur limit.
