SOHAR Port and Freezone’s Service Level Agreement (SLA) with Sohar University and Qualies (the Organization for Quality and Innovation Strategies) involves a tree planting initiative to be implemented in designated areas within the Port and Freezone, to boost ecological protection and management, as well as ensuring all SOHAR’s operations are compliant with Oman’s sustainability objectives.
Suwaid Al Shemaisi, executive manager of corporate affairs at SOHAR, said: “Efficient environmental management is integral to every business to ensure its continuity. Together with Qualies’ knowledge and expertise in planting native tree species and the resources offered by Sohar University, we at SOHAR can continue making a positive impact on the environment. This venture will also further our journey towards becoming a greener port and free zone complex.”
Greenhouse growth
The project will start at Sohar University’s self-sufficient greenhouse facility, which is capable of producing several varieties of plants, and boasts technologies to generate its own electricity and run desalination processes through solar power.
The seeds of native trees will be nurtured at the greenhouse by utilising hydroponic technologies. Upon reaching maturity, the budding florae will be transplanted to SOHAR using Groasis Waterboxxes, which will stimulate plant growth in harsh environments.
The planting is expected to take place by the end of the year and will see close engagement with local schools and the community in Sohar.
