{"id":1481,"date":"2021-06-11T13:34:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T12:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/coastlink\/2021\/06\/11\/hydrogen-trucks-trial\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:16:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:16:13","slug":"hydrogen-trucks-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/coastlink\/2021\/06\/11\/hydrogen-trucks-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen trucks trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The five new fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and two hydrogen fuelling stations have been launched as part of the US$82.5m Shore-to-Store (S2S) project by partners including the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Hueneme.<\/p>\n<p>Port of Los Angeles executive director, Gene Seroka, said: \u201cThis project is a model for developing and commercializing the next generation of clean trucks and cargo-handling equipment for the region and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hydrogen truck feasibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the S2S project, more than a dozen public and private sector partners have teamed up for a 12-month demonstration of the zero-emissions Class 8 trucks, which can each travel 300 miles on one charge of hydrogen. The project will be expanded to include five more hydrogen-fuelled heavy-duty trucks, two battery-electric yard tractors, and two battery-electric forklifts.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicles\u2019 duty cycles will consist of local pickup and delivery and drayage near the Port of Los Angeles and short regional haul applications in the Inland Empire. The project is designed to assess the operational and technical feasibility of the vehicles in a heavy-duty setting, as well as to expand infrastructure to support hydrogen throughout California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project partners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The port\u2019s technology development partners are Toyota Motor North America, which designed and built the powertrain\u2019s fuel cell electric power supply system; Kenworth Truck Co., which designed and built the trucks with Toyota\u2019s fuel cell electric system; and Shell Oil Products US (Shell), which designed, built and will operate the project\u2019s two high-capacity hydrogen fuelling stations in Wilmington and Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Partners operating the trucks are Toyota Logistics Services (TLS), UPS, and trucking companies Total Transportation Services Inc. (TTSI) and Southern Counties Express (SCE).<\/p>\n<p>Air Liquide is also participating in the project as a fuel supplier. The Port of Hueneme will partner on drayage runs and serve as the site for testing the zero-emissions yard tractors.<\/p>\n<p>The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is supporting the project with a grant of US$41.1m.
