{"id":1492,"date":"2021-06-17T10:31:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T09:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/coastlink\/2021\/06\/17\/hydrogen-shipping-close\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:16:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:16:21","slug":"hydrogen-shipping-close","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/coastlink\/2021\/06\/17\/hydrogen-shipping-close\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen shipping close"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland, and the Port of Rotterdam have completed a pre-feasibility study about exporting green hydrogen from Iceland to Rotterdam.<\/p>\n<p>Allard Castelein, CEO of Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: \u201cThis new green energy for Europe, distributed via Rotterdam\u2019s terminals and hydrogen backbone, could further help decarbonize our industrial complex and our customers elsewhere in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study shows that the first such project could be realised in the second half of this decade and be between 2 and 4 TWh (some 200 to 500 MW). These initial steps can reduce CO2 by up to 1m tonnes per year, whereas in the longer term there is potential to reduce CO2 by millions of tons a year.<\/p>\n<p>The energy needed could be a combination of renewable generation including hydro, geothermal and wind.<\/p>\n<p>The hydrogen would be produced through electrolysis and then either liquified or converted into a carrier for transport to Rotterdam where it would be recovered for use at the port or in the hinterland.<\/p>\n<p>An update on these plans is expected in the second half of 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delta Corridor pipelines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Port of Rotterdam Authority is also working with Rotterdam Rijn Pijpleiding Maatschappij (RRP) on a joint feasibility study regarding the development and construction of pipelines for various product streams, e.g. hydrogen, between Rotterdam, the Chemelot (Limburg) industrial estate and North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/p>\n<p>RRP (shareholder Shell, Ruhr Oel and bp) and the port authority will work in partnership with various Dutch ministries. The plan is to develop a public-private partnership within the chain that will also be open to other parties.<\/p>\n<p>The project team will be building on the results of an initial study into the proposed pipelines performed by the Port Authority, Chemelot (Limburg) and the Dutch state under the header \u2018Delta Corridor\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This study yielded positive indications regarding the possible reinforcement of West-East connections. Demand now appears to be strong at the German end with the country planning an \u20ac9bn transition plan.<\/p>\n<p>In this plan, a significant share of the associated hydrogen import flows could run via Rotterdam. This hydrogen will be used as both an energy carrier and a feedstock for e.g. petrochemical production and the steel industry.<\/p>\n<p>The port authority and RRP will be focusing on the technical and commercial aspects of the pipelines used to transport hydrogen, CO2, LPG and propane to various industrial clusters and companies in the Netherlands and Germany.
