The redevelopment, put at a total of $1bn, includes repositioning the Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) terminal, building the NYK terminal, and building new and improving existing road, rail and utilities infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Engineers completed 30% of the design this spring, leading to the environmental analysis and permitting process,&#8221; says spokesman Mike Wasem. &#8220;The port has begun a thorough environmental review under the Washington State Environmental Policy Act, including an environmental impact statement. When construction begins, our community will begin to see the blueprints take shape, sparking new business, more jobs and the foundation for future growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tacoma&#8217;s trade volumes have followed the recessionary US economy this year; teu volumes to the end of August were down 1.7% year on year, which Mr Wasem compares with a west coast average of 5.5%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More than 70% of Tacoma&#8217;s international containerised imports are discretionary &#8211; bound for major inland markets, such as Chicago.
