Hutchison Port Holdings’ group managing director, John Meredith, and HPH’s central Europe managing director, Clemence Cheng, formally initiated work to fill in the port’s Dock Basin, which is at the centre of the Felixstowe South Reconfiguration. The multi-million pound development will provide the first new deepwater capacity in the UK since the opening of the port’s Trinity 3 extension in 2004.<\/p>\n
Felixstowe South phase one will provide 730 metres of quay with 16 metres depth alongside, equipped with seven quayside cranes. The first berth is due to start operations in April 2010, with the second berth ready five months later.<\/p>\n
Phase two, planned for completion in 2014, will add 555 metres of quay with six quayside cranes.<\/p>\n
“We have already seen the world’s largest containerships calling at Trinity Terminal. There will be a significant increase in the number of these ultra-large containerships on the routes between Europe and Asia in the next few years, and this new facility at Felixstowe South will significantly extend and enhance our ability to provide the level of service demanded by our customers,” said Mr Cheng.<\/p>\n
However, he expressed his frustration over the UK’s planning system which, he said, had “pulled us back.<\/p>\n
“We originally expected to start operations at Felixstowe South in 2007 – now it is going to be 2010. Developing container terminals is never a simple task and although this has been a fairly straightforward scheme, as far as these things go, they are never quick. With the speed of the consent process in the UK, we have already been working on this development for over five years.”<\/p>\n
Costain has been appointed contractors for phase one. Site preparation, under way for several months, has already included drilling bore holes, relocating facilities for tugs and pilot boats and demolishing 14 buildings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
