Associated British Ports’\u00a3220m plans for expansion of its operations at Immingham and Hull on the Humber would have swallowed up more than 30 hectares of mudflat and saltmarsh habitat, used by more than 200,000 migratory wading birds.<\/p>\n
But rather than fight for the right to go ahead with its expansion plans through a long and expensive inquiry with an uncertain outcome, ABP chose instead to work with objectors to its plans and create new habitat to replace what would be lost – relocating a colony of 44 water voles at a cost of \u00a390,000 in the process.<\/p>\n
What makes the project so special is that the work has been completed under the first legal agreement of its kind in the UK.<\/p>\n
That gave objectors the confidence to step back and allow port developments to proceed, secure in the knowledge that the company had made a formal commitment to work with them to complete conservation developments alongside commercial ones.<\/p>\n
ABP’s Grimsby and Immingham port director Nick Palmer said: “Development of wildlife habitat is unlike any other ABP development to date because it has no commercial application.<\/p>\n
