Simon Shore, managing director, Cirrus Logistics, said to Port Strategy<\/i>: \u201cThe survey will be used to gather information on current working practices, with the objective of understanding how technology can be used to support better decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said that the results will also assist Cirrus in \u201cproviding terminal operators better tools\u201d to do their job. And it will show up possible process inefficiencies and gaps in the IT support provided to the vessel call berthing process at terminals.<\/p>\n
Mr Shore said that early trends from 40 respondents so far show that whilst different ports have different KPI metrics, port performance still relies considerable on the port planners individual experience and local knowledge. A ports performance therefore may be chiefly dependant on a manual planning process.<\/p>\n
Everyone who completes the survey will receive a results summary, so whilst anonymity will be retained a port will be able to bench mark itself against the industry \u2013 a useful tool indeed.<\/p>\n
Once all of the results are received, Cirrus will review the information with the assistance of SEAINTEL and the Global Institute of Logistics by forming a Best Practice Group. Chaired by the Institute the group will assist ports with operational improvements going forward.<\/p>\n
