The tender for the new terminals, which are to be built on land that will be reclaimed, is aimed at global operators who will compete for a concession for the operations of Ashdod\u2019s Southport terminal and\/or Haifa\u2019s Bayport terminals.<\/p>\n
Dov Frohlinger, chief operating officer, Israel Ports, told Port <\/i>Strategy<\/i>: \u201cThe new facilities are critical to Israel’s continuing economic growth which has resulted in average annual container traffic growth in excess of 7% over the last two decades. Our forecast indicates annual growth during this decade will be around 5.3% annually.\u201d<\/p>\n
The new terminals will feature facilities that have been designed to handle EEE class vessels, including two quays with a total length of 1600m with maximum waterside depth of 17.3m. Israel Ports has estimated that existing capacity, which is only able to handle vessels of around 9,500 teu, will be used up by 2017\/2018.<\/p>\n
Israel Ports told PS<\/i> that if new facilities are not developed, it will also cause major problems as vessel waiting time for berth will increase, causing delays in cargo delivery times.<\/p>\n
Mr Frohlinger added: \u201cVessel delays will also likely result in a change in the way shipping lines serve Israel, with direct calls to critical markets being replaced by feeders from transhipment ports – all of which will increase shipping costs, times and complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n
This aside, the development may have an impact on the port unions, which in the past have threatened action to prevent the emergence of competing private ports where they would have less influence over management.<\/p>\n
