Venice\u2019s Offshore-Onshore Port System (VOOPS) aims to make it possible for vessels to follow the shortest possible route between China and Europe by allowing them to bunker offshore, as discussed at COP21 in Paris.<\/p>\n
The port authority said that by adding new port and logistics capacity to the other ports in the North Adriatic Port Association it will makes it more convenient for large container vessels to call in the Northern Adriatic. The platform should help ensure minimum transport cost along the maritime route.<\/p>\n
A higher amount of large container calls at these ports could lead to lower fuel consumption along the full China-Europe route. In relation to the Suez-Munich route, it means that a saving of 78kg of CO2 emissions should be possible for each TEU.<\/p>\n
The Port of Venice said that global warming will not slow down without radical innovations in the transportation system. It said that the way forward should aim at constantly choosing the shortest and most efficient transportation paths.<\/p>\n
The port’s offshore platform will be positioned 8 miles offshore where the sea bottom is 20m deep. It will be protected by a 4.2km long breakwater damn which will shelter an oil terminal and container terminal able to accommodate up to three latest generation container ships at the same time.<\/p>\n
Expected to cost approximately \u20ac2.1bn, the entire project has been approved by the Higher Council of Public Works and received positive feedback from the Environmental Impact Assessment Committee of the Ministry of Environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
