Dr Christopher Wooldridge, Science Coordinator (EcoPorts) and Senior Trainer (Eco-SLC), said by achieving certification that the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) is both reaching the standard and setting new standards in environmental management.<\/p>\n
The concepts of EcoPorts and Green Ports are becoming an international trend in the sea transportation industry, emphasising that port development should not only focus on high profits but also on low environmental impacts, high bio-diversity, recovering habitats, and healthy communities.<\/p>\n
With the certification, the management of the environmental impacts of a port\u2019s activities is recognised as an intrinsic component of both the business and strategic policy of a port that includes the significance of compliance with legislation, reduction of risk, protection of the environment, and sustainability of operations.<\/p>\n
Dr Wooldridge congratulated the ports of Keelung and Taichung for both meeting the standard and manner of the development of their environmental management systems. He said, \u201cThey join the growing network of environmentally pro-active port authorities with members from South America and Europe that are putting the policy of sustainable development into practice.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the certification process to achieve the international standard of the Environmental Management System, PERS (Port Environmental Review System), it was acknowledged that the ports of Keelung and Taichung not only each reached the quality standard of effective port environmental management, but also demonstrated the efficiency and effectiveness of Taiwanese model of collaboration between Government (Ministry of Transportation and Communication, MOTC), Port Management Authority (Taiwan International Ports Corporation, TIPC) and University (National Sun Yat-sen University, NSYSU) in delivering effective environmental protection.<\/p>\n
The certification also demonstrates the cooperation among TIPC, the Taiwan Maritime Affairs Center of the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB), the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), Coast Guard Administration and both the Keelung and Taichung City Governments.<\/p>\n
