The contract is over five years, and will see the construction of the first phase of the port\u2019s quay providing three <\/span> berths and over 1.2 kilometres of <\/span> quay in a joint venture between <\/span> Laing O\u2019Rourke and Dredging <\/span> International. The new port will eventually handle 3.5milion TEU. <\/span> Chief Executive of London Gateway, Simon Moore, said: <\/span> \u201cThis contract is a major <\/span> milestone in constructing the <\/span> port. London Gateway is the UK\u2019s <\/span> first deep sea container port for <\/span> over 25 years and will change <\/span> the way millions of consumer <\/span> goods are transported around the <\/span> country. By integrating the new <\/span> container port with a logistics <\/span> park, many everyday goods will <\/span> be sent to the nation\u2019s shops <\/span> without having to be hauled on <\/span> a truck to a distribution centre <\/span> often situated inland hundreds of <\/span> miles away from a container port. <\/span> Instead, goods will go straight into <\/span> London Gateway\u2019s own logistics <\/span> park to be sorted and then sent <\/span> direct to shops.\u201d <\/span> DP World estimates that the <\/span> project will save 2,000 trucks from <\/span> the UK\u2019s roads every day, trucks <\/span> which normally travel from a port <\/span> and then return with an empty <\/span> container to be put back onto a <\/span> ship. DP World estimates that by <\/span> cutting out this inefficient part <\/span> of the logistics process, London <\/span> Gateway will take 52 million truck <\/span> miles off the UK\u2019s highways every <\/span> year, reducing congestion, saving <\/span> time, fuel and curbing carbon <\/span> emissions. <\/span><\/p>\n

London Gateway will aim to move fifty percent more containers <\/span> per hour on and off ships than is <\/span> currently being achieved in the <\/span> UK. Containers will be transferred automatically from the quay <\/span> into a fully automated storage <\/span> area. The new port will also offer other benefits such as being more <\/span> sustainable, creating less light <\/span> pollution and less noise for the <\/span> surrounding areas. <\/span> Construction work will begin later this year at the 1,500 acre <\/span> site, just 25 miles from central <\/span> London on the former Shell <\/span> Haven oil refinery at Stanfordle- <\/span> Hope near Thurrock, South <\/span> Essex. The logistics park, which <\/span> will offer 9.5million square feet, <\/span> is due to open in the latter half of <\/span> 2010, with the first ships arriving <\/span> in early 2011.<\/p>\n
