{"id":4932,"date":"2012-11-26T14:35:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/coastlink\/2012\/11\/26\/ics-heads-to-doha-climate-change-conference\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:43:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:43:13","slug":"ics-heads-to-doha-climate-change-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/coastlink\/2012\/11\/26\/ics-heads-to-doha-climate-change-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"ICS heads to Doha Climate Change Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the event, ICS will report on progress being made by shipowners worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions, improve fuel efficiency and to tackle some thorny issues surrounding market based measures (MBMs).<\/p>\n<p>A recent UNFCCC secretariat report on \u2018climate financing\u2019 suggested that the international shipping industry should make a substantial contribution of $100bn per year to the Green Climate Fund established at the 2011 conference in Durban last year.<\/p>\n<p>But ICS points out that IMO regulations to reduce ships\u2019 emissions, which enter into force in January 2013, is already enough to contend with and goes a long way to assist the industry meeting its commitment for a 20% efficiency improvement by 2020 and 50% improvement by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Bennett, ICS director of external relations, said: \u201cSome governments appear to be more interested in how much money can be raised from shipping, rather than the emissions reductions that this might deliver. Just because we lack a strong political constituency, we should not be treated as a cash cow. Governments must also avoid the possibility of modal shift.
