{"id":5018,"date":"2013-07-30T17:43:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T16:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/coastlink\/2013\/07\/30\/micro-plastic-impact\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:43:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:43:56","slug":"micro-plastic-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/coastlink\/2013\/07\/30\/micro-plastic-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Micro-plastic impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although the dumping of plastics into the sea from ships is prohibited under international treaties, plastic pollution continues to be a problem, acting as a pathway for bio-accumulating and toxic substances entering the food chain.<\/p>\n<p>The draft assessment report covers a range of issues including inputs of plastics and micro-plastics into the ocean, from land and sea based human activities and the mechanisms and rates of particle degradation and fragmentation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the report looks at the interaction of micro-plastics with organisms and potential physical and chemicals impacts and the processes of controlling particle transport and accumulation.<\/p>\n<p>The experts form a key working group (WG-40) under the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP).<\/p>\n<p>The International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which is the administrative secretariat of GESAMP, has contributed a number of in depth technical studies to the assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Further meetings will be held later this year and in 2014.
