It was a message the host port Amsterdam was keen to enforce in its welcome address.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we work together we can influence fairer and more efficient supply chains,\u201d said Koen Overtoom, CEO Port of Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut we must also get better at compromise with other stakeholders in order to get the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n A keynote address by Jan Peter Balkenende, chair of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition, introduced the concept of innovation to address global sustainability issues.<\/p>\n \u201cThe traditional way of working sometimes prevents us from making positive changes and seeking innovation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut if we don\u2019t share knowledge and work together we run the risk of failing.\u201d<\/p>\n Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid, secretary general FEPORT said that the fourth industrial revolution is well on its way including major changes such as digitalisation, remote management and high technology.<\/p>\n All of which can be utilised to harness better sustainability.<\/p>\n \u201cInnovation isn\u2019t something we should fear but embrace, the first movers will prosper in the new economy,\u201d echoed Conor Feighan from FEPORT.<\/p>\n Collaborate<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s all very well to innovate, but the real game changer in driving sustainability will be collaboration and knowedge sharing across the industry, especially when it comes to urban and port planning.<\/p>\n \u201cBut to do this we need to solve the lack of coherence and the poor knowledge exchange between interest groups\u201d said Malte Siegert, head of environmental policy at NABU.<\/p>\n The NGO\u2019s relationship with the Port of Hamburg could be looked at as an example for others. It\u2019s strong collaboration between all interest groups has led to the port\u2019s new clean air action plan.<\/p>\n The Port of Dover in the UK is applying the same principle to traffic management. Vicki Jago, head of safety and environment at the port, said that if it didn\u2019t collaborate with a number of parties, the result would be a queue of traffic from Dover to Antwerp.<\/p>\n The port tackles the issue in a number of ways including using a traffic modelling tool called Blip Track. The tool shares data with a number of stakeholders including the Highways Agency to predict and manage queuing.
