In the nine months to September, inbound cargo was 646,796 tonnes, compared with 914,642 tons in the same period 2008. But outbound cargo for the same period increased from 157,470 tonnes in 2008 to 219,245 tonnes in 2009.<\/p>\n
“Building materials are still at historic lows but agricultural imports – dry and liquid fertilisers – and exports – rice and sulphur – are starting to show a slow improvement,” says marketing director Bill Lewicki.<\/p>\n
Infrastructure developments at the port this year have been focused on security and the addition of paved storage areas for heavy lift and project cargoes.<\/p>\n
Stockton has responded to the downturn by reducing non-essential business expenses, he says: “But we have used this time to increase work on port infrastructure, specifically our rail facilities. Alternative energy projects, as well as our newly opened fertiliser and cold storage facilities are positioned well to assist us through the current business cycle.”<\/p>\n
The port is currently implementing a programme to identify opportunities to enhance the surrounding Delta, which provides drinking water for two-thirds of the state of California and habitat for more than 70 species of fish as well as much other wildlife.<\/p>\n
“The Delta provides a key resting or wintering spot along the Pacific Flyway for migrating bird species,” says Mr Lewicki. “The port understands the importance of maintaining this delicate environment and providing habitat for wildlife with an ever-growing population.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
