Yacht has been hired to manage a number of projects including buying new reachstacker capacity, which means replacing eight old machines.

Despite this, operators are prepared to pay the extra price because of perceived better levels of after-sales service offered by Kalmar in certain parts of the world.

Some manufacturers are prepared to slash prices, but only if terminals are willing to replace incumbent equipment supplied by rivals with theirs, thereby denying their competitors market share. However, the shortterm disruption this causes can sometimes outweigh any benefit obtained through lower prices so is something of a two-edged sword.

While manufacturers describe their reachstackers as being competitively priced, terminal operators are sometimes a little more forthcoming. Informed sources point out that Kalmars current ContChamp DRF model can be picked up for around US$500,000. This represents a premium of around 7.5% when compared to other European manufacturers.

[26
["post-1197","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-container-cargo-handling
["GET
