In the age of globalisation, market freedom and world democracy, all championed by the US, we appear to be experiencing a reversal of sorts. In Europe, Spain does not want a German company to take over a Spanish one but at the same time there is no problem with Spanish firms raiding overseas companies. France does not want intrusion from Italy, and Germany is also adverse to foreign takeovers. So much for the concept of a united Europe.<\/p>\n
In the US, the DPW takeover of P&O has created a storm of hypocrisy which is culminating in proposed legislation (much of it by reputed liberals such as Hilary Clinton) that is essentially anti-foreign, anti-Arab – and just plain anti. At last count there were at least eight bills tabled in Congress related to the DPW saga.<\/p>\n
What we are witnessing is the potential reversal of US foreign policy by Congress over the objections of the White House. We are also witnessing sentiments which are outright discriminatory and it can be argued that they focus on the Arab countries, all in the name of national security.<\/p>\n
Does this make us feel any safer? No. Does this improve the US position globally? No. Is this reaction a threat to the US economy? Yes. Is it a threat to US political alliances in the Middle East? Yes.<\/p>\n
The question is, how has it happened that such a strong emotional response to DPW erupted and should it not be to role of the US political leaders to allay fears rather than encourage them?<\/p>\n
The challenge now is to salvage whatever goodwill remains or face increasing isolation in the world. But the future is looking bleaker than in the past.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
